The UAB Homecoming Week 2021 theme is “We Built This City on Green & Gold.” Activities are hosted by the Blazer Spirit Council, UAB National Alumni Society, UAB Athletics, University Programs Board and more.

Homecoming events for 2021 include:

Hosted by the UAB National Alumni Society, the Gurney Derby Competition: Gurneys on the Green will take place on the Campus Green on Wednesday, Oct. 20. If you do not have the speed for UAB’s traditional Gurney Derby, this is your year. For Homecoming 2021, teams — of any size, from anywhere across campus — can decorate a gurney instead of sprinting with it. Sign up, bring the gang, and get crafty.

From 9-11 a.m., participants will have one hour to prep and decorate the gurneys; judges are looking for a strong display of Blazer Spirit and use of the Homecoming theme. Once gurneys are decorated, judging will be open from noon-5 p.m. Both virtual and in-person votes will determine the winners: The gurneys voted top three best-decorated will compete in an online vote on the UAB Alumni website.

The winning gurneys will walk in the UAB Homecoming Parade, at noon Friday, Oct. 22. For the 2021 parade, Blazers will bring the theme “We Built This City on Green & Gold” to life on floats. No candy or food this year, but the parade will feature UAB swag. Parade-goers are encouraged to wear their masks and socially distance. The parade floats should inspire UAB spirit for the Birmingham community, and awards will include Most Creative Float Design, Best Use of Homecoming Theme and Best Display of Blazer Pride.

* Lineup at 10 a.m.; judging at 11 a.m.; parade will begin at noon.
* The parade route is from 14th Street South, left on 10th Avenue South, left on 18th Street South, left on University Boulevard, and left to return to 14th Street South.
