The debate over plant-based meat as a sustainable and nutritious alternative to traditional meat is intensifying. Many consumers are choosing these options due to concerns about climate change and health. Plant-based meats typically have a lower carbon footprint and may reduce saturated fat and cholesterol intake. However, critics warn that their highly processed nature could pose health risks. 

Detailing about the same, we reached out to Ashita Gupta, Clinical Dietician, from Apollo Clinic and Lucknow Cancer Institute, and asked about the plant-based meat.

Expert’s Opinion On Plant-Based Meat

While plant-based meat is a popular alternative for many people, there are several reasons why it may not be a viable option.. In today’s time when the whole world is moving towards farm-fresh foods, intake of such processed items can pose severe health risks. Our expert gave a list of reasons why one should opt for natural foods instead of processed foods. 

  • They are rich in natural fibre and antioxidants.

  • Some of the other natural plant-based options are lentils, chickpeas, tofu and tempeh, quinoa, nuts and seeds

  • Leafy green vegetables 

  • They equally provide the same bioavailability of good-quality protein. along with multiple vitamins and minerals that are enzyme-friendly and easy to digest.

    Expert On Plant-Based Foods

Being a processed food, it may be healthier than some meats, professionals recommend eating less processed food. Our expert gave a list of reasons why one should opt for natural foods instead of processed foods. 

    • Natural food retains its original nutrients and is free from artificial additives.
    • They are rich in natural fibre and antioxidants.
    • Some of the other natural plant-based options are lentils, chickpeas, tofu and tempeh, quinoa, nuts and seeds
    • They equally provide the same bioavailability of good-quality protein. along with multiple vitamins and minerals that are enzyme-friendly and easy to digest.

    Why Plant-Based Meat Is Trending?

    Our expert explained why many people are shifting towards plant-based diets for the following reasons. 

    • They are perceived to be healthier, with lower cholesterol, saturated fats, and no animal hormones. 
    • Plant-based meat offers a way to enjoy familiar flavours and textures while reducing meat consumption. 
    • The protein makes one’s body’s inner environment more alkaline and less prone to diseases. 
    • Modern plant-based meats are designed to mimic the taste, texture, and even appearance of real meat, making it easier for consumers to make the switch. 
    • It is versatile and easy to cook, fitting seamlessly into traditional recipes.

    Takeaway

    The products under plant-based meats are high in protein and low in saturated fat, making them a good option for health-conscious consumers. However, since it is processed, it’s important to be aware of potential allergic reactions and to balance its use with whole, natural foods. While plant-based meat can help improve heart health and manage cholesterol, it should be eaten alongside other nutritious options for a well-rounded diet.
