Walking for mental health.
The third annual Mental Health Walk is on the stroll to Chetwynd today.
Spirit Park at 5pm will see speeches and a BBQ. If you or someone you know struggles with Mental Health let them know help is available.
David Milgaard is speaking at the event, who was wrongfully convicted of the 1969 murder of nursing student Gail Miller.
After spending 23 years in prison, with the help of DNA evidence his conviction was overturned in 1997 and a settlement was reached between Milgaard and the Canadian government totalling approximately $10 million. Since then – Milgaard has become a public speaker and advocate for the wrongfully convicted and prisoner rights.
Today, Milgaard lives in Calgary and speaks across Canada and advocates for the wrongfully convicted. He pushed for an independent Criminal Case Review Commission to make it easier and faster for potentially wrongfully convicted people to have their applications reviewed.
He recently met with Canada’s Justice Minister David Lametti to discuss the commission and this year Lametti launched public consultations on the creation of the commission. Milgaard also speaks against Canada’s punitive justice system and advocates for a restorative justice system.
In 2020 – 50 years after Milgaard’s wrongful conviction – the University of Manitoba presented him with an Honorary Doctor of Law degree.
