Gen Z is currently the most food conscious generation and are very particular about the food that goes into their bodies. This generation is extremely aware of which foods are best for their body and which foods will provide them the most nutrients. They are prioritizing overall health and well-being, mental health, and weight management. However, a new study funded by the California Walnut Commission and conducted by Indiana University School of Public Health- Bloomington states that most Gen Z are overlooking walnuts in their health research and food consumption.
The study revealed that those who consumed nuts in general, more specifically walnuts, had a lower chance of developing obesity and a lower relative fat mass (RFM). This observational study included over 19,000 people aged 12-39 years old. Specifically, the study revealed that young women who consumed more walnuts have a significantly lower change of becoming obese than those who didn’t.
The direct cause of why walnuts lower one’s RFM couldn’t be determined in this study and more research still needs to be done. That said, walnuts are still chock full of fiber and protein. They contain omega-3s, antioxidants and are known to help those with heart disease. Don’t let this nutritious nut pass you by.
