Camp Kawartha opened its new Rotary Health Centre Saturday.
The centre, described as “one of the most environmentally responsible buildings in Canada,” is a 2,070-square-foot straw-bale building that will run on net zero utility costs, using no fossil fuels, no waste output and a zero carbon footprint.
The centre will be used by the camp to offer education about carbon-neutral design, carbon sequestration, alternative energy generation, natural building materials, product life cycles, and green-waste management systems, states a Camp Kawartha press release.
The structure, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Peterborough, was designed by local firm Straworks.
Rotarians raised more than $470,000 for the project, with David Goyette leading the effort.
Camp Kawartha is located on Clear Lake north of Lakefield.
